At the Landessternwarte (state observatory) on top of the Königstuhl in Heidelberg, which was opened in 1898, still modern research is performed. The first director of the observatory, Max Wolf, was a pionier of Astrophotography, detected many comets, nebulae and asteroids. Nearly 1000 asteroids detections the Landessternwarte is on the top ranks. Apart from a short historical overview mainly the insight into modern research shows, that the Landessternwarte Heidelberg is one of the top Astronomical institutes in Europe.
